Mathematics

In mathematics, it is our intent that all students have the opportunity to benefit fully from an engaging and relevant curriculum, which helps students develop a sound understanding of Maths, equipping them with calculation, reasoning and problem-solving skills that can be transferred to life beyond school.

We aim for pupils to;

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Maths Curriculum Aims:

  • Develop Mathematicians through a love and enjoyment of the subject.
  • Promote an ethos of success in mathematical studies.
  • Ensure all students experience stretch and challenge to enable all to reach their potential.
  • Support retention of key numeracy skill and cumulative knowledge.
  • Encourage fluency of skills across topics.
  • Develop the use of algebra to generalise problems in all topic areas.
  • Students develop mastery through a logical progression and sequence of leaning of mathematical concepts.
  • Develop consistent strategies and methods for logical working.
  • To gain experience of applying cumulative skills to mathematical problems.
  • Create opportunities to identify where maths is used.
  • To develop reflective and resilient learners.
  • Support all students by focusing on key skills and removing barriers through differentiation and scaffolding.

Year 7 Aims:

  • Develop and secure an understanding of Non- Calculator written methods.
  • Introduce algebraic notation.
  • Build consistent foundations to all area of mathematicians.

Year 8 Aims:

  • Develop and extend structured approaches.
  • Develop calculator skills.
  • Extend basic concepts introduced in year 7 to create strong, enthusiastic, independent mathematicians.

Year 9 Aims:

  • Expose to broader topics such as Pythagoras’ theorem and Trigonometry.
  • Further develop the necessary skills to approach mathematical problems.

Year 10 Aims:

  • Expose to more complex topic areas.
  • Develop the use of key skills to approach further problem solving across all topic areas.
  • Financial capability project to develop financial understanding.

Year 11 Aims:

  • Highlight misconceptions and work towards a greater understanding in these areas.
  • Full revision programme.
  • Fortnightly GCSE papers.
